Pap smear

A Pap smear test is an examination used to screen for cervical cancer. The purpose of the test is to detect abnormal cells on the cervix that could develop into cancer if not treated in time. The smear test can also be used to check for the presence of HPV (human papillomavirus), which is one of the primary causes of cervical cancer.

How a smear test works:

  1. The procedure: A doctor or healthcare professional uses a small, soft brush or spatula-like instrument to take a sample of cells from the cervix. It is a relatively quick and uncomplicated procedure, which may cause mild discomfort, but it is generally not painful.

  2. HPV testing: Many modern smear tests also include an HPV test. This is important because certain types of HPV can increase the risk of developing cervical cancer.

  3. Frequency: Women between the ages of 25 and 65 are generally advised to have a smear test regularly, typically every 3 to 5 years, depending on your age.

Follow-up:

  • If the test shows mild cell changes, a follow-up test is typically recommended within 3 to 12 months.

  • If the test shows more abnormal cells, further investigations may be needed, and you will be referred to a gynecologist for further evaluation.
